Less than a week after the United States passed its controversial anti gambling bill at the eleventh hour, essentially putting the lid on online casino gambling, the twin island country of Trinidad has announced that it, too, would be seeking to ban online casino gambling. This surprise announcement regarding the online casino industry was made by Trinidad’s Prime Minister, Patrick Manning in the country’s capital, Port-of-Spain.
The online casino industry is not the only sphere of gambling to come under fire by the Trinidad Prime Minister. Manning announced that, in addition to online casino gambling, he intends banning slot machines and the country’s national lottery. It is old news that Manning, a socially conservative politician, was not a supporter of gambling of any form, especially online casino gambling. However, his move has been seen as slightly extremist in a country that has been tolerant of gambling in the past.
Many islands in the region rely heavily on the income from online casino gambling; however Trinidad and Tobago are blessed with oil which means that they rely less on gambling than other islands. Nevertheless, the country has seen an upsurge in the number of casinos – both traditional casinos and online casino sites – in the past five years. Following the US example, Trinidad has essentially banned the transfer of money to online casino sites through the use of credit cards; checks and electronic fund transfer services.
