Bill Frist, a Republican Senator, is pleased about the initial impact of his Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, which recently passed into law by President George W. Bush. According to press secretary, Caroline Weyforth, the legislation has already caused dramatic changes in the overseas online casino industry. Online casino fans in the US and online casinos companies alike are unhappy about this recent legislation and are concerned on how it will affect the future of the online gambling industry. ‘I would say that it is succeeding. Internet gambling was illegal and people were ignoring that fact.
Overseas companies were ignoring US law and coming up with ways around our laws, so all this bill did was basically put a mechanism in place to enforce existing laws,’ said Weyforth. UIGEA has already scared the online casino industry’s largest players away from the US market. Public online casino companies feel the UIGEA has closed enough gaps in the law that it is no longer possible for responsible companies to offer wagers to Americans. The resulting stock crash wiped billions of dollars off the London Stock Exchange. This affected many online casino companies which are based and operated offshore. The future of the online casino market and industry is still unknown, but many – both online gamblers and online gaming companies – are concerned that it will not be a bright one. Only time will tell how this anti-gambling law will really affect the future of online gambling. |
